But the Taxes Will Kill You -- H&R Block Settles Franchisee Lawsuits. On Friday, H&R Block agreed to pay 12 franchisees with franchises in several states an additional $130 million for the value of their businesses which were acquired by H&R Block. In September 2003, Block paid the franchisees $107 million for their businesses after their franchise agreements expired. The franchisees claimed that the value offered by H&R Block was unfairly low. With this settlement and the payment of an additional $130 million, both sides claimed victory -- H&R Block because it can now return to its business and put the litigation behind it and the franchisees because, well, they have another $130 million.
