I'll Have a Grande Double Decaf Non-Fat Soy No-Whip Mocha Latte -- on Ice. Newsday reports that another case threatening the existence of hot coffee everywhere has been filed in New York. A woman from Glen Cove, NY has filed suit against Starbucks, alleging that the coffee she was served at Starbucks burned her hands when it spilled from the Starbucks cup she was holding. This issue first rose to national attention in 1994, when a New Mexico woman sued McDonald's for injuries caused by hot coffee that she had placed between her legs while she was driving. The woman was awarded $2 million by a jury, an amount that was later reduced to $480,000 by the judge. Long before the obesity lawsuits, this case sparked a good deal of discussion about runaway consumer lawsuits.
