Singapore Rejects McDonalds Trademark Claim.

In the September 3, 2003 entry on the Franchise Law Blog, we posted a story regarding McDonald’s appeal to Singapore’s highest court over a food distributor’s use of the name “MacNoodles”in Singapore. The company, Singapore-based Future Enterprises Pte Ltd., distributes products under the name “MacNoodles,” “MacTea” and “MacChocolate.” McDonald’s claimed that the company copied McDonald’s trademarks, but counsel for Future Enterprises argued that the trade names bore no similarity to those of McDonald’s. According to this article on CNNMoney.com, the ruling “comes as Singapore positions itself as a bastion of intellectual property protection in Asia.” McDonald’s has 129 restaurants operating in Singapore.
